We all remember those final moments of Summer, and the excitement of a new School Year beginning. Often new school clothes, shoes, school supplies, haircuts.
But what about preparing for the September routine, the bad bugs that schools (and kids hands) are full of? Preparing the immune system, getting enough rest and dealing with heavy emotions that can arise?
There’s a few areas that you can focus on before September hits that will make for an easier transition for ALL
Let’s talk about reducing toxins in the home, and around school 1st……
This is a big one.
There’s nothing like trying your hardest, and feeling good about your choices then to be thrown for a loop.
We are becoming more and more aware of the dangers of plastics. And I promise to do a post soon on details on the different kinds. For now I am pleading with you to avoid the following numbers on your plastics, you will see them in the triangle on the item
(AVOID #1, #3, #6, and (O)
The other numbers aren’t 100% safe either, but they are known as relatively safe. Why does this matter with back to school? I recently found out the a lot of backpacks are lined with PVC, and usually that PVC is a #3, which is EXTREMELY TOXIC. And the same goes for lunch kits. And then add the containers that go in the lunch kit….. a lot of those plastics aren’t always the good ones either. Or baggies or cling wrap……. often those are the #3 as well…… oh my.
Alternatives are glass containers or a bento-box style lunch kit. You can go stainless steel which is a fantastic option but can sometimes be a bit more money. There are good plastic options of the bento boxes as well. Just look at the plastic number and make sure says BPA and Phthalate free on them. Though still, there are mild risks associated with all the plastics out there.
Confession, with a family of 5, I went with the plastic bento box #5, BPA and Phthalate free.
And what about CRAYONS??? – I attached a link that stated that Asbestos was found in some brands of crayons. Asbestos is a known carcinogen and is awful for our bodies. School supplies should be chosen carefully and with the best decision you can make with the information that you have.
Scary right?? But knowledge is power. And I wish I knew then. But I know now.
TRICLOSAN – FOUND IN MOST HAND SANITIZERS
The biggest merry go round there is! We need to keep the kids hands clean so they don’t spread bugs, but we often use a product that kills all the bacteria that they have no good bugs to fight the bad bugs…… so the bad bugs morph into bugs that multiply and the “hand sanitizer” can’t kill the bugs.
The culprit is – TRICLOSAN – this chemical is found in almost all products labelled “anti-bacterial”. Since this chemical can’t decide which bacteria is good or bad, it kills all. Leaving the immune system vulnerable and the perfect breeding ground for any yucky bug.
HOW TO ATTEMPT TO AVOID? – In my boys backpacks and desks they will have a triclosan free hand sanitizer! One that I either make myself at home, or my favorite one is from doTERRA.
My plan is to bring in some bottles to each of my kids classrooms and see if the teachers notice less sickness going around! Great experiment right?
HERE’S MY DIY RECIPE :
BUY OR MAKE NATURAL CLEANING PRODUCTS
I’ve said this a million times….. but the inside of our home is 100x more polluted than the outside because of many factors. A big one being the chemicals that we are exposed to in our beauty and cleaning supplies.
These chemicals wreck havoc on our immune systems, endocrine systems, and every single body system. The chemicals found in most household products are filled with toxins that are messing with hormone levels, creating respiratory issues, and putting us at a higher risk of Cancer and other diseases. Creating your own cleaners, and room sprays will decrease your toxic load substantially!
